But here’s one gem about peppermint you might not think about: It’s aces around the outside (and inside) of your home to keep insects out. Science has proved the theory that all kinds of pesky bugs hate the scent of peppermint – a few animals are even known to use the scent to protect themselves from predators. When bugs catch a whiff, they head the other way. Mosquitos, most notably, can’t tolerate the sharply piercing aroma. But ants, flies, roaches, moths, fleas, aphids, and beetles in the garden, and even spiders tend to start crawling in the opposite direction when they run into peppermint.
Do you notice ants around a particular baseboard in your bathroom, or window in your kitchen? Soak a cotton ball with about 5-8 drops of TLEO Peppermint and leave it there. (Be mindful to keep your pets away. They should never directly inhale pure essential oils.)
With summer coming on, be sure to employ this homemade peppermint oil insect repellent to help fortify your home and your got-to-get-grilling backyard, even your kids’ playsets, against the onslaught of insects this time of year. Keep in mind that peppermint is one of the most potent of essential oils, so a little can go quite a long way. With our DIY recipe below, we suggest you spray lightly and don’t overdo it, when spraying down surfaces the family will come into direct contact with, such as seating and kids’ swing sets, etc.
TLEO Peppermint Bug Blaster
Add 10-15 drops of TLEO Peppermint per 4 ounces of distilled water in a TLEO Amber Glass Spray Bottle (8 oz.) or adjust the recipe for a bigger batch and use a TLEO Amber Large Glass Spray Bottle (16 oz.). Blend well. Use this protective partner to spray around areas inside and outside your home where you tend to notice insects getting in or roaches scurrying about. And, when planning some gathering time outdoors, spray it all around the perimeter of your patio or deck before everyone heads out, as well as play areas. You can also plant peppermint around the yard for a boost of bug banishing.
Pro tip: If you store your TLEO Peppermint Bug Blaster mix in the fridge, TLEO Peppermint’s potency is likely to last longer.
